As the pace of modern living increases many business owners find themselves wishing they had a clone; someone who could do things exactly as they do and therefore make them twice as effective. Seems like a good idea but it can be a trap.

Here’s 3 reasons why you don’t need a carbon copy of yourself.

1. You’re not great at everything (yes, sad but true)

We all have natural abilities and preferences that make us good at certain tasks and not so great at others. Most people in business have at least one function or task that they struggle with. Maybe it’s bookkeeping, maybe it’s marketing, maybe it’s administration. Whatever it is, I’m sure you’re thinking of it right now. If you look for a clone then all you’ll get is more of the same and this business function or task will continue to frustrate not only you but your clone as well.

It makes more sense to find someone who complements your skills and possesses those natural abilities you’re not so great at, especially when growing a business and there’s a need to handle the many different aspects with a very small team.

2. Two heads are better than one

Different people have different perspectives, ideas and methods. By bringing someone into your business that is different from yourself, you create opportunities to discover better ways of doing things, maybe a niche market you haven’t thought of yet, perhaps another level to your current service or product.

3. Diversity is good for business

US study has shown that companies in the top quartile for ethnic diversity are 35% more likely to financially outperform those in the bottom quartile. That’s quite an advantage and if you’re in business I bet you’d like to get yourself some of that.
